When your friends who go to school (almost) everywhere else are enjoying their spring break, winter in Ithaca seems to never come to an end. With all the gloom outside brought by the snow and rain, here we have a list of movies for you that will act like the sun and lighten your up.

1Good Will Hunting (1999)

Watch how Robin Williams and Matt Damon portray a pure and touching relationship between a wise professor and an unsociable math genius that moved many, including me, to tears. You will laugh along with the hilarious and witty lines, while at the same time be saddened by why such a genius actor like Robin left us so early. If you’re looking for a critically acclaimed movie that is not sad or abstruse, this is the perfect one for you.

2Amélie (2001)

Amélie is a young woman who lives in her own fantastical world and dreams of love and beauty. She decides to devote her life to helping people around her in her weirdly lovely way. During these escapades, Amélie realizes that she must take a hold of her life and capture the true love she is always looking for. What can light up a gloomy day better than a delicate comedy like this with a touch of French romance?

3Before We Go (2014)

Two strangers met at midnight and fell in love before dawn – but no, this is not one of those cliché love stories with a happily-ever-after. It is a little adventure during which two people look for the answers to love, friendship, sadness and loss in the deepest moments of life. I would recommend watching it alone and at night, so you can really immerse yourself into the story and feel your heart melting, because it’s just too beautiful.

4Begin Again (2014)

A singer without a career meets a producer without a job, and together they record an outdoor album in the one and only New York City. Washington Square, Central Park, a subway station– everywhere can be your studio where your dreams come true. With beautiful music and amazing performances from Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, this movie is a love letter to New York City that will show you how to dream again.

5Guardians of the Galaxy (2015)

Want to catch up with the trend and watch a Marvel movie but don’t know which one to pick? Well, you won’t go wrong with this one. Why? a) You can easily understand it without knowing anything about Marvel; b) the AWESOME 80s’ music in the movie will make you dance uncontrollably (and we all know dancing is the best way to lighten the stress as a hard-working Cornellian), and c) these galactic weirdoes (read: superheroes) are just adorkable.

6Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

A rebellious kid who doesn’t want to go back to his orphanage teams up with his foster uncle in escaping from a national manhunt. They hide in the wild New Zealand bush and live like the real wilder people, while the entire outside world, from civilians to the army, is looking for them. Besides the wonderful New Zealand scenery, the movie presents a hilarious, funny and heartwarming story from an innocent child’s perspective. It is one of the best movies of 2016 according to Rotten Tomatoes, so definitely don’t miss it!

7Beauty and the Beast (2017)

This one has not hit cinemas yet, but it is already the most popular family movie according to its performance during pre-sale period. If you are exhausted by all your due dates and prelims, maybe a classic Disney story with lovely characters and music will make you feel loved again.

Movies may not be the only way to stay upbeat when you’re feeling down, but they can definitely do the trick. Despite the weather, don’t forget to smile, work out, eat healthy foods, and always believe that everything will be okay.
