We did our own (completely scientific) survey to determine what commercial establishments undergraduates wanted to include in this building (besides air hockey and ping pong, of course).

The Stacks: A Sophisticated Gentleman’s Club

Live Nude Girls dance daily for your enjoyment. In keeping with our books-and-boobs theme, our dancers are also available as intellectual call girls and will discuss a range of subjects from financial accounting to Foucault.

Happy Dave’s OakenDrunk Bar and Grille

The early 90’s are back with a vengeance at this new campus pub. BRBs and Meal Plan accepted, and the karaoke machine — stocking hits from Chumbawumba to Will Smith to Venga Boys — is absolutely free. Note: You must wear flannel, florescent Adidas windpants and/or platform sneakers to gain entrance.

Slope Media Annex

In the southwest corner of the Collegetown community center, a small computer lab has been transformed into a global media empire (Time Warner Global Media Group, eat your heart out). Peer through the plexiglass as “Joey” and his gang claw their way to worldwide domination. Slope Media Group, Slope Encyclopedia Sales and the Slope Galactic Mars Exploration Mission are all housed here.

Zinck’s Greek Emporium

Your perfect one-stop-shop for all things college. Togas imported from Athens made from the finest Persian satin adorn the walls in shades of deep red and majestic blue, while hand-crafted, cutting-edge ice luges are perfect for classy pregames with your favorite T.A. Beer pong tables come freshly sanded in both regulation size and junior. Customizable super-sick frat crests are available on all merchandise upon request. Bros of all shapes and sizes welcome.

SMG will launch its new services at an information session for the entire campus Monday, Sept. 10, at 5 p.m. in the Robert Purcell Community Center auditorium.

SMG is based on campus in Willard Straight Hall, with branch operations in New York City and Doha, Qatar. Its goal is to bring together the Cornell community and student groups from all parts of the world to share their experience, knowledge and information through real-time media participation. Slope Radio, an online radio station, began operations in 2006; now with more than 220 student participants and a broader mission, SMG is one of the largest student organizations at Cornell.

Slope TV and Radio will be fully operational by Sept. 10, delivering diverse programming to a global audience, using online streaming technology and on-demand services and user-generated content on its Web portal.

Primetime programs debuting this fall will feature Cornell’s international programs and students overseas, such as “Around the World,” a cross-continental live talk show on all things Middle Eastern, co-hosted by Vishnu Ravi ’08 in the College of Arts and Sciences and Hekmat Alrouh ’10 at Weill Cornell Medical College in Doha.

“Cornell in China,” produced in collaboration with Cornell’s China and Asia-Pacific Studies (CAPS) program, will present live reports from student correspondents and discussions with Chinese students from Beijing.

SMG also has signed a deal with Cornell Big Red, the university’s intercollegiate athletics department, to give viewers unlimited free access to online broadcasts of varsity sports games, pre-game events and interviews with players and fans.

Sports broadcasts begin with the first football game of the year against Bucknell University, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., and future highlights include the Cornell vs. Duke basketball game on Jan. 6, 2008, from Durham, N.C.

Live broadcasts run 24 hours a day on Slope TV at http://slopetv.com/ and CUTV Channel 111, and on Slope Radio at http://sloperadio.com/, where more information on SMG and a complete listing of programming is available.

Programming — news, entertainment, sports, expert interviews, special projects, live chat and talk shows — will be cross-promoted through Slope Radio Magazine, which is fully advertiser-supported and available at http://sloperadiomagazine.com/onlineedition.

Slope Radio, Cornell’s online radio station that has become an established campus presence after one semester of operation, plans to expand into new offices and television broadcasting in 2007.

The concept for Slope Radio sprang from an experiment in the fall of 2005 by its three creators, Yaw Joseph Etse ’08, Alex Zahn ’07 and Jeff Bookman ’07, who began an online broadcast from their fraternity house.

“We had some friends abroad who heard it and said we could do something more legitimate with it,” said Etse, the organization’s president and information technology director. Those friends have since brought “The Gong Show,” a variety program on the London School of Economics’ student radio station, to Slope Radio.

Over the summer, Etse met with Tracy Vosburgh, the university’s director of multimedia development and production, who became the group’s adviser. She referred him to Michael Tolomeo of Cornell Information Technologies, who helped with logistics and with using CIT’s multimedia server for the broadcast.

Slope Radio began broadcasting over the summer and officially launched Sept. 4. The service broadcasts online at http://SlopeRadio.com 24 hours a day, with a variety of live shows offered between 4 p.m. and 2 a.m. from a studio in Appel Commons. The rest of the day, an automated computer program plays music including hip-hop, reggae and indie rock.

“If you tune in, you’re going to hear anything from country to rap, and people seem to have been pretty receptive of that, overall,” Zahn said. “In essence, it’s good that we have no specialization.”

The live programming includes music, news, comedy, interviews with performers coming to Ithaca, and talk shows on topics from sports to sex. Zahn’s show, “Pit Stop,” Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., explores music, musicians and trends, and provides historical context.

“One day we did a show on bands that had evolved thanks to Myspace, which is a huge scene in itself,” he said.

Students are always dropping by. During the “Open Mic” show on Fridays, “we usually do a top 10 list and talk about recent events and have freshmen come in and talk,” Etse said. “It’s intended to be comical.”

All 23 shows are archived and available as podcasts on the Slope Radio site, which has around 1,000 listeners a day, Zahn said. Besides entertainment, the service provides practical training for broadcasters. (WVBR-FM, owned by the nonprofit Cornell Radio Guild, is managed by students but operates independently of the university.)

“A lot of students feel there aren’t enough opportunities to practice the production side of broadcasting,” Etse said. “We’re working with Geri Gay [chair of the Department of Communication] to set up some kind of lab, hopefully for credit.”

The student activities fee and some donations have helped with equipment and operating costs. “It’s been a problem getting advertising and funding because we’re new,” Zahn said. “We don’t need a lot, but it would be nice to have better microphones and sound quality. Right now we’re making do.”

Slope Radio’s student officers will be working during the winter break on revamping programming and on steps to establish a channel on CUTV.

“We’ve talked about getting our own channel that has Cornell news and Cornell events,” said Zahn, who has co-hosted “Campus Insights” on Ithaca’s public access station. “We could even maybe move to satellite [radio] if we get a big enough following the next few years.”

Participation in Slope Radio is open to anyone in the Cornell community, and the station is taking proposals for new shows and applications for officers, producers and DJs; for information see http://sloperadio.com/cgi/wp/community.php.

“It’s a lot of work to get it running,” Zahn said. “We want to have shows that are politically driven or news-driven. We would like to provide another venue besides the Daily Sun to know what’s going on.”

Slope Radio will move its operations to 107 Willard Straight Hall next semester, over spring break.

“Looking down the road, we really feel like Slope Radio is a service, and a way that students can express their opinions,” Etse said. “Next semester, we’re really focusing on getting more student groups to have their own shows.” The Whistling Shrimp improvisational comedy group has already approached them to do a show, he said.

Drawing attention to AEM’s Undergraduate Business Program are recent stories featuring students Mark Zimmerman ’08 and Alex Zahn ’07. Mark’s unusual marketing assignment during his summer internship at Sinek Partners—to help a homeless person in New York City increase her revenue by creating more effective signage—was showcased in “Selling Sympathy.” And Cornell’s new student-run radio station, SlopeRadio, co-founded by Alex and two other Cornell students, was featured in “Good Morning, Ithaca.” (Be sure to tune in to this innovative new Internet radio station!)

AEM also got a nod in Forbes when it featured Seth Flowerman’s company, Career Explorations, in “The New Business of College: Dorm Room Titans.” Seth, a junior in AEM, founded his company when he was only 16. Career Explorations operates a summer program for high school students that brings them to Manhattan or Boston for an internship.

October 3, 2006 – 8:50pm
By Blythe Posner

Many of you have heard about Slope Radio, the new radio station introduced to Cornell this fall by creators Yaw Joseph Etse, Alex Zahn and Jeff Bookman, but you may not know about some of the interesting new radio shows that students are producing and DJing themselves. Here’s an inside look at some of the buzz worthy broadcasts that are airing weekly at www.SlopeRadio.com.

The Gong Show

Airing on Thursdays from 8:30 p.m. until 10 p.m., DJ Revlon (aka Sun Senior Editor Kyle Sheahen) and DJ Books’s The Gong Show is one of Slope Radio’s most notable new shows. The show, which was formerly with PULSE FM, The London School of Economics’ student radio station, has revived itself at Cornell and is already getting a great response from Slope Radio listeners. The highlight of The Gong Show is perhaps the weekly Top Ten, which is often absurd and always amusing. Most recently, DJ Books and DJ Revlon have counted down the most entertaining displays of unsportsmanlike conduct and have named Mama T.’s the worst dining establishment in the Ithaca area. In addition to their top ten, The Gong Show’s hosts discuss sports, music and the social scene at Cornell. One of the show’s most enjoyable features is the weekly update from its London correspondent on the latest and most ridiculous headlines from the British tabloids. Not only is The Gong Show very funny, but it also provides some excellent background music to daily activities. On each episode, DJ Books and DJ Revlon introduce their listeners to up and coming rock bands, as well as play the latest from some of their favorites. With a well-balanced mix of music and talk, it is no surprise that The Gong Show is already one of Slope Radio’s most highly rated shows.

Sexcapades

Every Monday at midnight, DJ LP hosts the station’s most outrageous show, Sexcapades. The show, which is completely uncensored, follows LP and her various guests as they discuss everything from blow job etiquette to post-sex snuggling to debates about most favorable sexual positions. LP’s Sexcapades crew includes producers ADubs and Ethan, as well as some noteworthy guests such as Slangston Hughes, one of the most hysterical personalities to grace Slope Radio’s Appel Studio. Without fail, each week, LP’s hilarious cast of characters engage in uproarious repartee about the truth of sex and dating at Cornell, giving listeners both male and female perspectives on all issues. However, the late night show is not all fun and games. LP’s topics of discussion extend not only to sex and sexual health in the news, but also to hot topics that this campus is very much involved with, such as the recent epidemic of HPV among men and women in their 20s. Of course, the serious atmosphere at the Sexcapades live broadcast is often broken up by bouts of laughter following side-splitting interjections. DJ LP and her friends are always entertaining and definitely do not hold back, which is why Sexcapades is a prime example of the creative freedom that the new Slope Radio is offering Cornell Students. Tune into Sexcapades Monday nights from 12 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Ear to the Ground

Wednesday nights, Slope Radio listeners should be sure to check out Will Malnati’s new show, Ear to the Ground, which features a great variety of music and some extremely entertaining commentary. Each week, Host Malnati and his guests review the latest music and sports news; however, run of the mill radio talk is not all that Ear to the Ground has to offer. “The Prank Hour,” one of the show’s best segments, features Malnati and his guests prank calling their friends on the air in hilarious fashion. Now, if you think of prank calling as a fun but immature relic of the past, you are right; but the Ear to the Ground boys take the game to a new level. This past week, Malnati and his special guest, Isaac Ross, successfully duped their dumbfounded friends live on the radio as listeners laughed out loud. Ross’ spontaneous rap battle with another DJ was another memorable and priceless moment from this Wednesday’s Ear to the Ground, a truly funny and worthwhile listen. Ear to the Ground airs every Wednesday from 8:30 p.m.-10 p.m.

The Prime Time Slide

For an assortment of new rap and hip hop music, listeners can flip on The Prime Time Slide on Sundays from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m. On The Prime Time Slide, host DJs Nemysis, Flash and Latte talk about everything from fashion to movies to music to what Jay-Z has been up to recently. On each episode, The Prime Time Slide DJs play “The Sexy 16,” a countdown of the top 16 songs of the week based on Cornell students’ web votes. Thus, the show is ideal for listeners who want to keep themselves up to date on the newest music to hit the airwaves. The Prime Time Slide’s three hosts and producer A-Town have a great on-air chemistry as they discuss what’s new and hot around the country and at Cornell. As DJ Latte has promised, The Prime Time Slide will be playing quality hip hop and “keeping listeners up to date on the latest news in the music industry” all semester. Even if you are not interested in hip hop or rap, The Prime Time Slide, like much of Slope Radio’s new lineup is light-hearted, fun, and well worth a listen.
