Sounds Like: Jenny Lewis, Band of Horses, Cass McCombs, Bon Iver

If you are one of the masses that has fallen under the charm of country inspired indie music, then Blake Mills should already be in your collection. Having toured with the likes of Jenny Lewis, Julian Casablancas and Band of Horses, Mills has already had a lot of exposure to this crowd.

Recently, my heart was broken by his music after listening to his cover of Lucinda Williams’”I Just Wanted To See You So Bad” (another person he’s toured with). Mills brings back that old school rock n’ roll feel to music, and his voice is simply to die for.

Not only has he covered some amazing songs, Mills has also released his own E.P entitled Break Mirrors, which features the song “Wintersong” which after only 2 days in my itunes library had already been played 39 times, second in my top played only to Kanye West. His E.P, recorded in a friends’ studio doesn’t reek of pretentiousness but simply a man with a voice trying to make some music. And it is this unassuming personality that is present in all his interviews, for example when he explained what the name of his album meant he simply said that it was what his favorite Chinese restaurant thought his name was.

I’m in love.

As you may know from listening to the show, my roommate Julian is an electronic music aficionado. Although he is a skilled DJ for the masses who filter in and out of our room, on his own time he spins his true favorite music, tech-house, minimal techno, and deep house. This music tends to be a little easier on the ears, with bubbling, consistent, clean beats that bounce with an unaffected coolness that is lacking in much of the modern electronic music scene. We’ve been discussing doing a mix for the show for a while now, and this week we finally got around to trimming down the playlist to ten unbeatable songs; a one hour mix of what seems to me some of the finest crafted electronic music. For all ye who tend to avoid this sort of music, I urge you to give this a listen. You won’t be sorry.

Julian says: Pleasurekraft is a dj producer duo, making deep and groovy, yet also hard and dirty techno. 

2. Blink – John Dahlback

Julian assures us: This guy has been around for a while (early 2000′s, which is a while in the electronic music world), producing both techno (the category “Blink” falls under) and minimal techno under his alias Hug. 

3. Be Who You Want – Joris Delacroix

Julian exclaims: Amazing tech house. Mamma mia, this is amazing tech house!

4. Some Slip – Geiser

Julian exclaims: Amazing minimal. Mamma mia, this is amazing minimal!

5. Corporate Butcher (Solomun Remix) – Tiefschwarz feat. Mama

Julian rambles: Two german brothers founded Tiefschwarz all the way back in 1996. Back then, they were known for their electro house sound (think Diplo, Jack Beats etc.), however nowadays, they produce mellow deep house. I think this song is kind of a heroin song, (a term Julian uses for moody, ethereal house music popular among junkies) but it’s fucking amazing. I have no clue who Mama is by the way. Which I guess makes this song an orphan?

6. Drop Down (Do My Dance) – Afrojack & The Partysquad

Julian wishes he was speaking Dutch: Afrojack is one of the most well known Dutch House/Dirty House DJs at the moment. Originally from The Netherlands (Spijkenisse, pronounce spaikehnisseh). This song was the first song he became famous with (at least in the Netherlands/ Europe). As you can hear in this song, his earlier works were more towards the tech house side of house rather than the dutch house direction he has taken recently.

7. Son – Monkey Safari

Julian gets acid reflux, then says: Monkey Safari is a DJ duo from Germany meshing African rythyms with techno, fidget house and tech house. Result: tropical and bubbling beats this jolly boy cannot stop listening to. Somebody help me!

8. What You Say Is More Than I Can Say – Ricardo Villalobos

Julian says: A Chilean-German minimal techno and microhouse DJ. The Jacques Pepin of minimal techno. Played congo and bongos as a little boy, which influenced his music style and sense of rhythm. 

9. Satyr Song (Umek Remix) – Pleasurekraft

Julian swears: “Rosé in my brain…Cocaine in my dickvein.” A random hobo screamed this at pleasurekraft right before WMF and so they made a song about it. Pleasurekraft is a DJ producer duo, making deep and groovy, yet also hard and dirty techno. 

10. Those Dancing Days (Cassian Remix) – Monkey Safari

Julian confidently claims: The sampling of gospel in this song is characteristic of Monkey Safari’s genre-bending eclectic tastes. And it tastes so good.

Foxes

Sounds Like: Niki & the Dove, Florence & the Machine, Ellie Goulding

Foxes, aka Loui Rose Allen, is somewhat of a newcomer to the scene having only one single out as of now. But if you like female vocalists with some awesome beats and a tinge of female power, Foxes could be your next favorite artist.

Her single, “Youth” sends the kind of message anyone in our generation can relate to, We all just want to be young, and Foxes is able to say this in the best way possible with some awesome percussion in the back. I can’t imagine anyone listening to the beat dropping in around the minute mark and not getting swept into the song. I can promise that you will be listening to her for awhile now, because she really is an Artist on the Rise.

Also isn’t she just the CUTEST?!?!?! (in a less annoying way than Zooey Deschanel)

Olafur Arnalds

Sounds like: Sigur Ros, Mum, Yann Tiersen, Or any beautiful soundtrack

I want to move to Iceland. There are only a handful of songs that truly move me to tears, and every band that does this happens to be from this Nordic country, I think there must be something in the air there.

Olafur Arnalds is an Icelandic composer who has opened for Sigur Ros and composed some of the most heart-wrenching music I’ve ever heard. Every violin feels perfectly in place with the piano, and random sound glitches reveal themselves to not be random at all, but simply blend in effortlessly with the rest of the music. This is what a movie soundtrack should be like, this is tears turned into a song.

Arnalds released his last album “…And They Have Escaped The Weight of Darkness” over a year ago, and now he’s back with his concept album “Living Room Songs”. The album is composed of songs that were released once a day for a week, every song was accompanied by a video that Olafur actually shot in his living room, and all are equally haunting. What Olafur Arnalds is trying to do with this album is bring back the personal aspect of music, something I think that is too often glossed over.

If you are one to love Sigur Ros but sometimes are annoyed by Jonsi’s voice (though I don’t understand this), then Arnalds creates the perfect sound-scape for you. Barely 25, the composer is rapidly making a name for himself and is surely one to listen to whilst attempting to do homework or study for that final.

It’s been a hectic semester, but putting on great music for you guys has been awesome.  Hope Everyone had a great Thanksgiving, maybe the stress of finals will help take off some of that turkey weight.  We decided to go back to our bread and butter for the last show this semester, just plain ol’ awesome music.  Hope you enjoy the Little Hurricane cover for “Baby It’s Cold Outside” to get everyone in the Christmas Spirit, which reminds me…….. ITS FUCKING CHRISTMAS!

Sounds Like: Cults, Best Coast, girlie rock softness

Tennis is compromised of two ex philosophy majors who after graduating went sailing for 7 months together. After living on a boat, they thought the next logical thing to do would be to release an EP entitled Cape Dory. Thank god Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore decided to get married and make music, their particular style of sail friendly indie pop/rock is perfect to listen to if you’re craving the sound of waves but are landlocked (Thanks Ithaca, lakes don’t count).

Their next release Young And old is due February 14th (COULD THEY GET ANY CUTER), and in preparation the couple have released a new single entitled “Origins”. Using their same style of beach infused listener friendly music, Tennis is also changing things up by using Patrick Carney of the Black Keys as their producer, something sure to get everyones’ attention.

If you like high school dance music, or romance friendly indie music, Tennis’ next album should for sure be on your radar. And at the least, you have to think their love story, published in the form of their first album is cute enough to merit listening to their next effort.
