Her single, “Youth” sends the kind of message anyone in our generation can relate to, We all just want to be young, and Foxes is able to say this in the best way possible with some awesome percussion in the back. I can’t imagine anyone listening to the beat dropping in around the minute mark and not getting swept into the song. I can promise that you will be listening to her for awhile now, because she really is an Artist on the Rise.

“The selection of a Republican candidate for the presidency of this globalized and expansive empire is — and I mean this seriously — the greatest competition of idiocy and ignorance that has ever been.”
-Fidel Castro
Ladies and gentlemen we have now sunk to a new low. Fidel Castro has now called our presidential candidates ignorant and idiotic.
That aside there is a larger and more interesting societal change that has manifested in our presidential election. A couple of years ago Old Spice Deodorant released a line that they dubbed “Red Zone” marketed at an active man. The kind of man who lived an intense and active life style, he climbed mountains, cut down trees, and all around embodied the rugged masculine man. Several years that same line was rebranded as “Swagger” which marketed the confident man as the ideal. That is not to say he should be effeminate. He should still have the perfectly toned body and a determined masculinity while he should have perfect style with incredibly coiffed hair. Perhaps Old Spice was just reacting to the success that Tag and Axe had with similar campaigns. However this shift is now even more visible in our political candidates. Rick Perry, the traditional rugged man, received initially positive results; however, his manliness was instead seen for what it was: a pitiful veneer that could only pass for leadership in a Texas gubernatorial race. Thus Romney, the coiffed and confident man remained strong though his confidence paled in comparison to that of Newt Gingrich, a man whose ego is trumped only by, well, Trump. Santorum and Paul have fallen by the way side because they choose alternate calling cards to sheer confidence, earnestness and intelligence respectively. With Gingrich sticking around in the polls, parts of the Republican establishment are trying to show the public that Gingrich has confidence but in misplaced policies and half-baked ideas. I am all for a colony on the moon but former speaker Gingrich considers it a pressing issue in the current global climate. With incredible economic and political volatility in all corners of the world I think we have some more important problems to take care of at least for now. So it’s about time to stop being blinded by the veneers of confidence and instead look at the issues themselves.

When I hear the world “library” the first adjectives that come to mind are boring, quiet and stuffy—all three of which sound equally unappetizing. This explains my relatively abnormal level of astonishment when I discovered that one of my favorite places to eat on campus is Mandibles, a café in the lobby of Mann Library.

In addition to its unique location, there are so many other factors that make Mandible café like no other eating establishment I have ever been to. First off, Mandibles prides itself on being a sustainable café, featuring compostable utensils, compost and recycling bins, and a discount on all hot beverages provided that you use your own reusable thermos.

Of course the most important differentiating factor between Mandibles and any other place on campus, is its menu. It was not until I set foot in Mandibles that I actually began to appreciate Cornell’s location in the middle of (what I consider to be) absolutely nowhere. This is because Mandibles sells only food made from locally grown ingredients. Ithaca might not have the biggest shopping malls or the best methods of transportation, but it certainly beats anywhere I have ever been when it comes to agriculture.

As a food aficionado, there is nothing I love more than food that I know for a fact is fresh. Featuring locally grown organic vegetables, locally raised beef and poultry and dozens of other ingredients from right down the road, whether or not my food will be fresh is never something I have to worry about when I walk into Mandibles.

Though I consider myself an omnivore in every sense, I continue to be impressed by the variety of vegan options one can find at Mandibles. From vegan apple crisps and vegan muffins to vegan mac n’ cheese, Mandibles certainly makes a valiant effort to please those with even the most restrictive of eating preferences. Perhaps most impressive, is that Mandibles is actually able to make its vegan options look and taste just as appetizing as anything else on the menu. Who knew cheese-less mac n’ cheese could taste just as cheesy and delicious as real mac n’ cheese?

Though vegan food is never something I ever anticipated trying let alone enjoying, I have actually grown to love some of these vegan delicacies. In fact, the best thing I ever ate at Mandible Café is their vegan soup. Though the soups of the day are subject to change at least a few times a week (a testament to their freshness), there is always a vegetarian/vegan option along with a meat option. Among the best soups I have ever eaten at Mandibles are the Vegan Corn Chowder, the Vegan Tomato, and the Very Veggie Vegan made with cauliflower, carrots, potatoes and spinach.Generally speaking, I find that every time I order soup off of a menu at a restaurant it is tragically under-seasoned. On the contrary, I have never once had to reach for a salt shaker at Mandibles café.

In addition to delicious soups, the Mandibles menu also boasts a large selection of muffins and scones baked daily, homemade hummus, hearty salads, sandwiches, and a burrito bar—all of which are topics for another food blog.

Since my discovery of Mandibles, my previous opinion of libraries has gradually evolved from nauseating to digestible. In fact, I have found my GPA increasing as I employ Mandibles’ treats as motivation to study. Unfortunately for my parents however, my credit card bill has also begun to reflect this routine. Though the one down side of Mandible’s café is that big red bucks are not accepted, this is just a small price to pay for the plethora of fresh, innovative foods you will soon enjoy at this delicious, sustainable eatery.

The last time I spoke to Rob Resnick (Rez) and Cal Shapiro of Timeflies, they had just released their first album The Scotch Tape. It was evident that they were unsure of what to expect; having developed a loyal Twitter following and “Timeflies Tuesday” fan base, they were hoping for a positive response to the album, with maybe some chatter here and there about their new music. What they got was much, much more.

“We didn’t expect [the reaction that we got],” Cal explains. “The night before we released it, we had our whole team of kids we went to college with on Google hangout sitting around saying ‘hopefully everyone will be talking up a storm about it, and maybe we’ll see it on Twitter or Facebook.’”

Well, the fans heard it, and definitely talked about it- and now Cal and Rob were playing one of their many sold out shows on their tour at Webster Hall in New York City.

With their success, Timeflies continues to alter and experiment with their sound and create a genre all their own. Rez explains, “Collaboratively, we haven’t been compared to an artist, but people will say ‘oh Cal sounds like…’ or ‘the production sounds like…’ which is good because that means that nobody has fused those sounds together yet. I get a lot of Xaphoon Jones references and Cal gets a lot of Drake which is pretty cool for us.”

Having just released a music video for their song “Switchblade,” their fan base continues to expand as they generate an impressive résumé. Cal explains the story behind “Switchblade” stating, “It started as a last man on earth kind of thing and it started to evolve. When we were writing the chorus, we had everything down for a different song, and realized we needed to make this its own track and go a completely different way with it. At the time we were writing the chorus, I remember it was the most epic thunder storm, so that was where the inspiration for ‘the world ends tonight’ into the beat’s drop came from.” Additionally, as avid sports fans, to have “Switchblade” featured on FOX Sports as well as an Under Armour commercial was one of their greatest achievements- and the song proved to provide an intense and edgy soundtrack to each.

After being on tour for a few months, Cal and Rob love to recall some of their favorite performances. One of the highlights of the tour was their performance in Dayton, Ohio. Cal remembers, “We were jumping to “Cars, Money and Fame” as we tend to do, and the laptop toppled off the back of the stand and it was just dead- thankfully though, the mics were still working. So I [decided] I was going to freestyle and Rez will drop a beat. Rez starts beat boxing while he’s plugging everything in […] and right on the last line, he gets the steel drum intro to “Under the Sea” going. Everyone thought we planned it.

“So now we were playing a show at Northeastern, performing “Cars, Money and Fame” and the entire system blows out. I end up free styling yet again, and then we got a guitar and did an acoustic set; so that was an interesting night, too.”

Despite the common theme of experiencing technical issues while performing “Cars, Money and Fame,” Cal and Rob still enjoy performing it- when asked their favorite, however, Cal undoubtedly responds with “Until the Sunrise” and Rob loves “For You,” both of which are tracks off of The Scotch Tape.

With their growing fame, it is common for the guys to be recognized by fans in some less than ideal places. “We were seen one morning in an airport in Cincinnati at quite possibly one of the most hungover moments of our lives. He was a nice a guy and asked for a picture with us, but I’m not sure how it turned out,” Rob says laughing.

It is with their humor and determination that Cal and Rob continue to put together new material as they focus on their upcoming mix tape and the never- ending stream of Tuesdays headed their way. With The Scotch Tape, they were happy making their original work accessible to their fans, but they are looking forward to doing some covers as well, ranging all the way back to the R&B soul- style of Sam Cooke to as recent as Rihanna’s upbeat pop hit “We Found Love.” As for the future, Cal says “we just want to get better on stage- crazier shows, more stuff going on, improve production value […] We get better every show we do, but we need to get better faster than that […] I love our current show and I think the fans do too, but the sky really is the limit.” And it is with that attitude that Cal and Rob head into 2012- a year in which they will continue to prove that the sky is the only limit on their creativity, originality, and innovation.

I apologize. I am sorry to anyone who read my article in the magazine. I said that Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Jon Huntsman were sticking around for the sole purpose of garnering enough attention to get a show on Fox News. Frankly I think any of the three would be willing to take a show on Fox News, but I was wrong to say that they are not going to win. Ever since I submitted that article the previous front running candidates have taken the kind of nose dive that would not shame an Olympian, and just as graceless as the divers are graceful. Rick Perry bumbled enormously, epically, and uh uh I can’t remember the third one. Oops. We found out Herman Cain never learned to keep his hands to himself. Michelle Bachmann has tried hard to remain relevant however earlier gaffes and her poisonous social policy keep her in the background. Watching a foreign policy debate, it almost seems like she actually did her research before a debate to the surprise of just about everyone. Mitt Romney enjoyed watching everyone implode and frankly it couldn’t get any better every time one of his fellow candidates seemed to gain momentum, we actually got to know them. Each time it turned out these revelations were to their detriment. Then Romney started talking, and something that had always stuck around the periphery of his campaign reared its ugly head, or more accurately two heads. There were several instances of Romney changing his views from those of his gubernatorial campaign. Then suddenly it wasn’t just one view. These days it seems like he has at some point supported both sides of every issue. Basically the previous field has imploded. Maybe Tim Pawlenty should have stuck around.
So now that the dust has started to settle again, at least for now. Where does the field stand? Well the current leader appears to be Newt Gingrich, who, while brilliant, just seems to be too contemptuous to be likable. It’s hard to deny his resume, a PhD, former multiple term senator, de facto leader of the Republican Party before becoming speaker for the house. The problem with Gingrich is that he just seems too mean and cocky to really engender support outside of his camp. He epitomizes the term “Washington Insider” and a vote for Newt is essentially gambling that there are more Republicans than Democrats in the United States because he will be hard pressed to get votes from across the aisle with his reputation as a hard line Republican who essentially writes the party doctrine.
So what about Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum? Recently both have been quietly performing more than passably during the debates. Huntsman has propounded a free trade economic policy and as former ambassador to China, he boasts significant foreign policy experience. He seems like the type of moderate that could move out of Romney’s shadow as a Mormon former governor to pose problems later in the campaign. Santorum on the other hand seemed to start out as a shock value candidate that relied on talking points has branched out to proclaim some interesting views on foreign and domestic policy shunning the isolationist views that some of the more hard line candidates. I didn’t forget the little libertarian that could, might, and maybe even should win. He is still consistently hitting his points but frankly the Republican electorate is just not ready for him.

“This is my outfit for tonight,” Billy Joel, donned in a Cornell hoodie and cap, explained to the full house at Bailey Hall on Friday night. “I left my clothes at home.”

Right away Joel made it clear that he didn’t intend for the night to go as a normal concert does. Rather, he asked for audience questions, and here and there treated us to a bit of music on either piano or electric keyboard, or in Joel’s words, his piano and his “abbreviated piano. It has pianist envy,” he joked, pointing to the small keyboard.

While he did play through a handful of his songs, many of his musical interludes were fun parodies or improvisations. His first performance was a parody of Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed And Confused,” to explain why, on this night, he couldn’t do all of his songs justice. As he let out a screech in the style of Robert Plant himself, the clunky piano accompaniment sounded ridiculous, though the audience didn’t seem to mind.

Throughout the night, Joel used his piano skills to explain a question or build upon a joke. When asked if he has specific goals while writing, Joel said he never sits down and tries to write a hit. “I was usually trying to get a girl into bed,” he said, and moved to the piano to play through Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven. “It’s been an inspiration for composers for centuries,” he argued, and broke into Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” Pausing between the melody, he shouted out to the audience, “Beethoven got smoldery! He’s so deep! So troubled!” amidst laughter.

While still on the topic of hits, he played his first full song of the night. “Let’s get this out of the way early,” he said, and delivered a lively but rushed “Piano Man.” The ecstatic audience sang along to a chorus. When finished, Joel noted the song’s quirks, such as its six eight time signature and its length. “It’s half an hour long! What the hell kind of a single is that?”

He touched on his influences to tell how he was inspired to write “Uptown Girl,” saying it was meant to be an homage and a joke, as a way to do the opposite of Frankie Valli’s “Rag Doll.” He also addressed a question about Paul Simon and delivered a fun rendition of “Only the Good Die Young” pausing before the lyric, “You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation,” to pinpoint Simon’s influence.

Joel continued to field interesting, serious, and heartfelt questions throughout the show, and talked about his ongoing tour with Elton John, his work with Ray Charles, and his admiration for current artists Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and The Killers. He also addressed personal, albeit sometimes awkward or bizarre, questions from the audience. A Renee from Vienna asked about the song “Downeaster Alexa,” but first had an odd exchange with Joel about his history in Vienna and claimed to know his brother, conductor Alexander Joel, which left Joel looking more than surprised. Another girl enthusiastically asked whether Joel knew her uncle– “He goes by Snake!”– and if they had played in a band together back in the day. Joel’s answer was no, as was his answer to another girl’s request to accompany her to her sorority’s formal party.

Another unexpected moment occurred when Joel called President Skorton to the stage to accompany his “She’s Always a Woman” in exceptional Ron Burgundy fashion. A thrilled and bewildered audience cheered as Skorton marched up to the stage, retrieved a flute, and started riffing. At first, Cornell’s President seemed nervous, but soon got into it, and by the end was powering through countermelodies.

Toward the end of the show, Joel talked about possibilities for new music and a future tour, as he’s been off the road since March 2010. He then treated us to a new tune, a contemporary classical instrumental he called “the hymn,” and referenced classical composer Edgar Elgar as an influence. Apparently, the next music Joel releases may be a very different direction from hits were used to, as he said he has been writing thematic, abstract, instrumental music.

Wrapping up the concert, he played fan favorite “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” and addressed his time as a high schooler who looked up to the popular kids. He also flew through his take on The Beatles’ “You Never Give Me Your Money,” to kid that even the greats don’t know what words they’re singing. And though he closed with a powerful, vocally strong performance of his revered “New York State of Mind,” his best performance of the night, undeniably, was his “Vienna.” Right before the song’s start, Joel explained his history with the city. The song, he said, is for his father, who died last year. The audience, completely silent, watched Joel’s passionate delivery. His scatting, which he’d added to other songs during the night to make up for lack of instrumental break-downs, was anything but corny. Most in the audience were likely easily moved by his powerful delivery.

He left with thoughtful parting sentiments that any college student can relate to. Speaking on education, Joel explained his loss of interest during high school, as the goal was only to pass the test, not to actually know or learn things of substance. He stressed to the audience to have fun in life and follow one’s interests. Additionally, he advised not to limit oneself. Poking fun at those who claim to only listen to one type of music, he acknowledged that “There’s a banquet out there.” When he left the stage, he had talked and played for nearly two and a half hours, but in all honesty, the time had flown by. Joel achieved great transitions from questions to songs, and the audience was not only thoroughly entertained, but also touched by Joel’s words of wisdom.

Olafur Arnalds is an Icelandic composer who has opened for Sigur Ros and composed some of the most heart-wrenching music I’ve ever heard. Every violin feels perfectly in place with the piano, and random sound glitches reveal themselves to not be random at all, but simply blend in effortlessly with the rest of the music. This is what a movie soundtrack should be like, this is tears turned into a song.

Arnalds released his last album “…And They Have Escaped The Weight of Darkness” over a year ago, and now he’s back with his concept album “Living Room Songs”. The album is composed of songs that were released once a day for a week, every song was accompanied by a video that Olafur actually shot in his living room, and all are equally haunting. What Olafur Arnalds is trying to do with this album is bring back the personal aspect of music, something I think that is too often glossed over.

If you are one to love Sigur Ros but sometimes are annoyed by Jonsi’s voice (though I don’t understand this), then Arnalds creates the perfect sound-scape for you. Barely 25, the composer is rapidly making a name for himself and is surely one to listen to whilst attempting to do homework or study for that final.

As I thought about which food item to discuss in this week’s blog, I realized something. You really can’t have a comprehensive food blog without a Thanksgiving feature. After all, Thanksgiving is the holiest day of the year for the food lover.

As a food aficionado, the thought of leftovers has always been positively indigestible for me. However, this year I learned something: leftovers, if treated correctly, can be just as satisfying as the original meal.

On Friday night, 24 hours post-thanksgiving, I was scavenging through my fridge looking for something quick and easy to put together. As I was getting ready to throw in the towel and order in pizza, something incredible caught my eye. It was an entire container of leftover stuffing. I tried to look away. I even closed the fridge. I swear it called my name.

The stuffing fiasco would have been manageable, had an equally full container of my mother’s homemade cranberry sauce not been sitting right on the countertop. When the cranberry sauce and the stuffing started teaming up against me, I knew it was time to surrender. It was on this cold, dark and dreary Friday night that the Post-Thanksgiving Panini was born.

So here’s how it goes. I took a challah roll—but you can really use any kind of roll you like, and slathered on a generous amount of cranberry sauce. Then, a stuck some slices of leftover turkey in there, and topped it off with stuffing.

Though I could have stopped right here, I asked myself: how can I elevate this gigantic, vulgar-looking sandwich from barbaric to sophisticated?

That’s when it came to me…the panini maker! As I carefully lifted my masterpiece onto the Panini maker and pressed the top down, I could almost taste the success. When I took my first bite of that warm, gooey, deliciousness, I knew I had invented something that would become a post-Thanksgiving staple for years to come.

It’s been a hectic semester, but putting on great music for you guys has been awesome. Hope Everyone had a great Thanksgiving, maybe the stress of finals will help take off some of that turkey weight. We decided to go back to our bread and butter for the last show this semester, just plain ol’ awesome music. Hope you enjoy the Little Hurricane cover for “Baby It’s Cold Outside” to get everyone in the Christmas Spirit, which reminds me…….. ITS FUCKING CHRISTMAS!

Make sure to ask for some good shit from your parents while you still can (don’t be afraid to pull the Steve Jobs card to get a nice new Ipad). Make sure to go egg nogg shot for shot with your friends on Christmas Eve to get in the Christmas Spirit (just follow the picture below to see how).

Well be coming back next semester, but things will be different. Our very own Eileen Ceconi has become VP of Slope Radio, and barring her bankrupting Slope Media, a bunch of new changes will be made. While we will have a new name and time, we will still bring the same awesome music you don’t know and love.

Till January,

Now, the turkeys will turn heads, and the farmers will give one more last ditch effort to fatten them to perfection. Actually, it’s probably too late as they are already shipped, chopped, frozen, and traveling to your nearest grocery store unless you are into local food and on the day of, travel to the farm and get a bird straight off the chopping block. Every Thanksgiving, I watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Maybe someday they will get the idea of having a cow parade. Think of all the mooing and distractions. Anyway, pandemonium would likely ensue. Maybe it would be easier to stay at home, kick up those boots and listen to this week’s installment of FPC. Enjoy!
