Sounds Like: Shabazz Palaces, Erykah Badu, The Internet (I promise it’s someone from Odd Future)
It took a lot for me to finally listen to this duo compromised of Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White. Let that be a lesson to all of you, this band is a must listen if you like to straddle the line between rap, hip hop and indie music.
Their debut album, “AwE NaturalE” has already garnered a lot of positive attention, hinting towards how big they are going to become in the next year. Their single “QueenS” is by far one of my favorite new tracks right now, they manage to create a song that has rap, amazing vocals, and a little bit of an old time jazzy feel to it. At times this song even sounds like a disco that is being whispered in my ear. No, I do not know what that means, I just love it.
Unlike other songs of this genre, Irons and Harris-White make both the rapping and the singing stand out, neither one is background to the other. Because of this, the songs sound effortless and every instrument blends in perfectly. This music sounds a little like an homage to past R&B while at the same time looking towards a future. A sure must listen for anyone who claims to like any R&B at all!
