February 15, 2010

Coming off of a big win Friday night against Penn, Cornell Women’s Basketball went into Saturday’s game hoping to upset the 18-2 Princeton Tigers.

Princeton was ready for the Big Red at the first whistle. They had four offensive rebounds in the first four possessions and left Cornell scoreless for the first three and a half minutes.

Cornell did not give up easily. Virginia McMunigal opened up the scoring and with lots of help from the defense Cornell was able to cut the lead to two with 13:02 remaining in the first half.

Princeton did not let up at all and turned the game right back around with an 11-0 run making the score 25-12.

Niveen Rasheed was the star of the first half for Princeton. She was 6 for 8, 14 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists in the first half alone. The Princeton Tigers outrebounded Cornell 27-15 in the 1st half.

The 2nd half started off well for Cornell offensively and defensively. The Big Red held Princeton off for the first 6 and a half minutes until Lauren Edwards put up three. This started up a scoring run for both teams.

In those two minutes, Allie Fedorowicz of Cornell had three baskets, but was answered with three points by Krystal Hill of Princeton. Rasheed did not start off the 2nd half as well as she played in the 1st, but halfway through she picked up her momentum again.

With 5:39 left Rasheed and Princeton took off and extended their lead to 18. Cornell did not lead once in the game, but they pressed on.

With 2 minutes left, Cornell and Princeton both took out their starters and had only freshman on the floor. Although the final score was 72-49, it did not reflect how well the Big Red women played.

For Cornell, Fedorowicz ended the game with 15 points and Clare Fitzpatrick with 10. Senior Lauren Benson had 10 assists and freshman Whitney Hagan led the team with eight rebounds.

But, Devona Allgood’s 16 points, Hill’s 12 points and a 15-rebound double-double from Rasheed put Princeton over the top.

Cornell’s next game is on February 19th at 7 PM against a 14-7 Harvard Crimson team who will be coming off a win against the Brown Bears.
