Long gone are the Facebook’s “wall-to-wall” days when it was a simple yet elegant university networking tool to chat and catch up with the people we just met on campus. These days, pictures of cats, people’s meals, their daily rambling, things we might not necessarily care about flood the newsfeed. All these nagging moments leave a deep void for a network where we can easily find and connect with other students who are in the same classes or match our interests. This is where the latest location-based iPhone app Uni+ steps in. It is not meant to replace the existing social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Rather, it helps users find and discover others before moving those contacts over to other social media platforms.
Less formal than LinkedIn and far less information sharing than Facebook, Uni+ is a mobile app that allows you to find nearby classmates and alumni from your college or university, providing a safe and fun way to connect with new acquaintances in your area. By providing a local community where people can post social activities, or find things they’re looking for within their network, Uni+ fosters the same spirit you felt in the dorms on the first day of freshman move-in. Based on profile information and location that you enter, users are matched to those who are similar to them in their proximity. People can discover others from their school year, the classes they are taking, areas of study, industry, hometown, activities, and interests. Currently, Uni+ is the only mobile app for meeting new people that is strictly university and mobile based, ensuring security by verifying users through their university email address or official Facebook network. This offers a stark contrast to other location-based social discovery apps which are flooded with random and irrelevant users with unverified profiles and untruthful personal information.

The inspiration came when Alexandria Sun, Cornell’11 and Yang Han, a graduate of University of Toronto, first moved to New York City after graduation and they started talking to their friends about the experience of meeting others in a new city/environment. They found that many people, just like themselves, wanted to connect with others from the same university, whether for networking, meeting new friends, job leads and dating. Unfortunately, most universities only have a few formal alumni gatherings or charge high alumni club membership fee. Even after these hurdles, the experience of striking up conversations and trying to find those who share a few things in common with you can be very overwhelming and time-consuming. To make the process of finding people with the same passions and interests, the app Uni+ is thus created.

So far, Uni+ had a “soft launch” in mid-March, most notably at the University of Toronto, Cornell, and NYU. News of the app’s offerings have been spreading primarily through word of mouth and Facebook marketing, helping Uni+ land a few hundred users only a couple of weeks into its launch, gaining new users and growing everyday. They’re excited to continue improving their codes this summer in order to bring you a better app when you come back to school in the fall! Also expected this summer is the release of the Android based version of the app so that anyone with a smart phone can participate! They will also be coming out with additional features such as letting users create and join communities which would complement the current group chat function.

The ability to be anywhere and find classmates around you makes networking and socializing much more convenient. On campus, the app could have an endless list of uses, from allowing student groups to post events to students advertising pick-up games on the quad. With a large base of users, Uni+ will provide an unparalleled way to connect with classmates and make new connections no matter where you are.

Many people have heard of the hit show, Dancing with the Stars. The Cornell competitive ballroom team decided to host their own spin of the show. Three different professors, Bruce Monger, Jennifer Wissink, and Jim Blankenship were approached and given the opportunity to participate in this competition. Kristina, Ryan, and Kimberly, three extremely talented ballroom team members reversed the usual teacher student dynamic as they taught the professors how to dance. They each created the choreography for their specific dance. The professors dedicated a lot of their time to learning the new dance moves. All three learned how to be students along with the Viennese waltz, the jive, and the Charleston. After this experience, they will be able to relate more to their students who have a hard time understanding and learning their respective subjects.

Interspersed with the competition dances, couples from the team danced. The couples moved perfectly in sync and seemed to float around the dance floor or steam it up with a rumba or Latin dance. These dancers took ballroom dances and spiced them up with popular songs and incredible skill.

While waiting for the results of the ballot for the winning professor, the floor was opened to everyone who wanted to give dancing a try. I personally tried it out and had fun but I won’t be dancing in competition anytime soon. Professor Blankenship and Kimberly were announced as winners, however due to the hard work and impressive moves of all the couples, trophies were awarded to all.

It was a great time and if anyone wants to learn how to dance a Viennese waltz and pretend to be in the ballrooms of Europe or salsa with the best of them, the ballroom dance club has instructional meetings on Tuesdays so go give it a try.

Hi again! Have you ever seen a cow? and no, it doesn’t count if she makes up the background setting for your favorite TV show or wears a big smile on the label of your milk jug that you buy from the grocery store. In my opinion, they are beautiful creatures to behold. I invite you to visit your local farm especially in June (National Dairy Month). Each cow wears a unique pattern of black and white blobs. They are very gentle creatures and quite entertaining to watch as they chew their cud. Some days, I would pass an entire afternoon in my hay loft and watch our cows in the pasture. Against the backdrop of azure blue sky, white puffy clouds, red gambrel-roofed barns and golden corn silk, the black & white Bessies complement the scenery well. It is post-card perfect! Happy Holidays from Wiscowsin. Note: Cow Parade visits Moscow.

Hello from the cornfield! What’s up this week? How ’bout some tunes ’bout… hmmm. It’s semi complicated to explain this week’s theme, but I will try. When someone says cow– what is the first image that comes to mind? Do you picture a black & white demon twenty times larger than yourself cowering over you as you prepare yourself to get stepped on by its hoofs and face-blasted by its swinging udder? or do you picture a cute and cuddly stuffed animal sitting in the toy store window? or do you recall the pungent perfume of manure and the loud rumbles of moos and the strange aliens that seemed to spend all day standing around in mud and be in the same position as you drove back from visiting your grandmother in the countryside? My definition of a cow was not on that list (thankfully), but case in point, the word “cow” has a strict dictionary definition (I invite you to go to Merriam Webster online if you so desire) and many other interpretations. This past week, I played songs that all had the same title, but each artist interpreted it in various ways. The same but different. But I hope we agree that milk is delicious. Note: Cow Parade visits Madrid!

#73: According to legend, watch a virgin cross the Arts Quad and then witness A.D. White and Ezra Cornell shake hands***

It was late on Friday night, early Saturday morning. Central campus was empty, everybody was sleeping, stumbling around Collegetown, or studying. I was walking back to my dorm after a night of festivities when I saw it happen. A lone ranger was walking home from Uris Library, after what I assume was multiple cups of coffee and hours of cramming for a prelim. They had completed the walk through the quad, almost to Thurston Bridge, when I was walking by Sibley. The wind changed and I glanced to the right. I froze.

A.D. White was lifting himself from his chair as Ezra climbed down from his pedestal. I stared as the two walked purposefully toward each other, shook hands like real men do, and proudly bowed their heads in acknowledgement of the virgin soul that crossed the quad before me. They marched back to their respective seats and as they settled into their thrones, their bodies once again became rigid and lifeless.

For a minute, I remained still, trying to absorb what I had just witnessed. I replayed the scene all the way home, understanding I had seen myth become reality. On North, I saw the individual who had caused the event of the night. This student, male or female, I don’t know, had no idea what they caused. They still do not know that their sexual purity brought White and Cornell back to life just long enough to exchange a greeting.

So back to reality… Why doesn’t everybody see the statues shake hands? Cornell is FULL of virgins…

***This week’s column is metaphorical and is not an account of actual events. It is meant to provoke thought and celebrate legend. Surprisingly, I didn’t even go out on Friday night.

I was stupid to have arrived at the Haunt 20 minutes after the show was supposed to have started. Not because I missed out on anything, but because it was empty, dead. With my first drink in hand, my friend and I were already wondering if maybe the show was going to be completely empty. Whatever fears I had about that night being too quiet and without enough dancing were quickly quelled once the show started, a mere hour late.

From 11 to Midnight Breakbeat Lou was spinning while various members of the Cold Crush Brothers came on stage and MC’ed. I spent the entire time either moving my body in dance-like movements or meeting some legendary people. Joe Conzo, the photographer of the early hip hop movement, came over to hang out with my friend and I and proceeded to buy us drink after drink. From meeting Pop Master Fabel, Afrika himself or Johnny Juice, I can’t really decide what my favorite part of last night was. It was a show to remember.

I know Ithaca is small, and maybe a little more white than black, but the crowd last night was so heavily mixed and laden with people who just appreciated hip hop in its purest form. I was standing outside at one point, talking to Joe and Dan Smalls, who then dubbed me Baby Love, Dan simply said “Ithaca needs to have more nights like this.” And I have to agree, no matter what age or race you are, it’s hard to resist good music and vibes, something everyone in attendance last night was blessed with.

Finally, around midnight when Afrika finally took to the turntables, the crowd was anxious. He played song after song with fluidity that I’ve never seen any DJ have. This man is a genius, and watching him perform with LPs and just going with it was mesmerizing. Along with the crowd, I let go of my inhibitions and danced like the entire venue was mine. For anyone who has an ear for music and an appreciation for DJs, the next Afrika Bambaataa show is not to be missed! Keep your eyes open for when the date is announced!

It’s my vehicle of choice– looking snazzy with a shiny new coat of red paint from a farmgirl’s friend, Homer D. Poe. I shine it so much that I can see familiar blue eyes boring into mine. The top’s always down, so my blonde hair always catches a breeze. My sleeves are rolled up, so I don’t get stereotyped as a farmgirl the moment I walk into a Macy’s looking for a Duff Ball dress. I won this baby in a contest– only cost me 10 bucks in raffle tickets. It’s better known as my 1954 International Harvester Super M, and no, I won’t let you drive it. Note: cow parade visits Costa Rica!

The coolest thing to come to the food industry is milk. Yes, that white liquid produced by the mammary glands of mammals, according to the wise Wikipedia. My swimming friends tell me the best thing to drink after a rigorous pool workout or after doing a butterfly sprint at the nationals is a big ole glass of chocolate milk! For all you technically-inclined folks out there who aren’t in my dairy science class this semester, milk is an emulsion of butterfat globules within a water-based fluid that contains dissolved carbohydrates and protein aggregates with minerals. Both the fat globules and casein micelles (proteins), which are just large enough to deflect light, contribute to the opaque white color of milk. Doesn’t that sound delicious? If not, just think if you lived in Russia and got your milk from a moose dairy! (no joke) If you are burning up after listening to these songs, just drink a big ole glass of milk, and hopefully, you don’t have lactasia! Note: cow parade visits Chicago.

Tonight, the Glee Clubs of Morehouse College (Atlanta, GA) and Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) put on quite a musical spectacle to a packed audience. For two hours, Sage Chapel swelled with spiritual songs and masculine notes that swirled to the rafters.

The Cornell Glee Club directed by John Rowehl began the concert with a few short pieces. Although the first song consisted of repetitive phrases, the various dynamics took this song to another level. The layered voices swelled, one of the signature abilities of this glee club. Dressed smartly in black suits with black bow ties, they continued with a traditional sounding Georgian folk song. Then varying the pace, The Hangovers, a subset of the Cornell Glee Club, took center stage singing Smashmouth’s Allstar. Serious personas and melodic phrasing infused with energetic beat-boxing created an interesting rendition of this popular song, quite enjoyed by the audience. The next song featured two soloists whose voices supplemented the exquisitely-blended background vocals. Cornell ended their set with a soulful selection, featuring Ryan Smith. Beginning in a low voice, he captivated the audience with his smooth notes and left the audience hungering for more melodies.

The Morehouse Glee Club directed by David Morrow delivered just that after literally running to their respective spots on the risers. They made quite an appearance, standing at attention in black suits and white bowties as the audience quivered in the pews, in eager anticipation of their first notes. Beginning with a short selection, it soon became apparent their ability to create a multitude of sounds. Their blending was impeccable. A signature feature was always the last note; when holding onto the fermata, the purity of their voices could clearly be heard. The third song expressed such a fervor of sound that one could imagine an impending storm while the next song began with one synchronized intake of breath and ended with many voices swelling as one. A piano was added to the next song which also featured dynamic hand-clapping and snapping as the glee club broke into two groups. They ended their set with a passionate piece featuring loud, commanding voices warmed by the opening piano trills.

Following the intermission, the Morehouse College Quartet, a subset of the Morehouse Glee Club, performed two songs. The second provided comic relief as they whipped out colorful handkerchiefs and sang as a barbershop quartet about Coney Island. Their performance recalled an era gone by, yet they succeeded in engaging the audience. Their fellow members joined them in the front and unleashed an even greater array of songs in the second half of the night. The first piece featured more instruments to supplement the glee clubs’s vocal instruments but didn’t overpower the voices. Betelehemu, the second piece, was the pinnacle of their portfolio and was rewarded with many hoots and hollers from the audience. It was incredible how one song could be such an intense and powerful experience. Shakers, cowbells, and drums established a rhythm that was echoed as the singers marched from side to side. Tambourines flashed as the players dipped down and swirled them in the air. Singers clapped in large, controlled motions from side to side. At the end, I overheard a woman say, “… and ain’t nobody broke a sweat.” The atmosphere remained electric with some fast-paced songs and others of a spiritual nature highlighted with soloists. Their last song proved the strength of their voices as the thunderous sounds announced their presence to all.

To conclude the night, the two glee clubs combined their talents for two songs. Ave Maria could only be described as magical as the Cornell Glee Club sang from the back of Sage and the Morehouse Glee Club sang at the front. Their sounds spanned the entire chapel and floated on the air in between. Then, the Cornell Glee Club approached the front and sang from the aisles, surrounding the entire audience with beautiful notes. There was nothing electronic about this surround sound; it was purely human and perfectly blended. The Cornell Glee Club continued up to the front to join the visiting choir. Members were squeezed in amongst the others, creating a quilt of alternating white and black hues all united in song. The audience was transfixed. The ending song Got a Mind to Do Right was powerful yet controlled. Voices reached such a volume that they echoed around the corners and moved the audience to their feet with captivating applause. The Morehouse College Glee Club and the Cornell University Glee Club created nothing short of a spectacle tonight.

To sing a little Queen, “She gives me hot and cold fever, then she leaves me in a cool, cool sweat.” Hopefully, I wasn’t varying the temperature too much this week by playing songs with the theme of temperature in the title, artist, or album name. It’s said that cows can predict the weather. Who needs Mark Baden, our hometown Channel 12 weather anchor, who always shows off his latest weather modelling software or rather a Cornell degree in meteorology to predict an imminent bowling game of the gods when you can glance out your back window to your field covered by cows sitting down? They say we do things on the cheap in Wiscowsin, and to that I reply, hey, cows have a better track record than all those fancy gizmos. I would put my money ( if I had extra to spend on these type of bets ;P) on the black-and-white, milk-producing, cud-chewing Holsteins any day! Note: Cows are from Boston: 1st= Red Sox!

Slope Media sat down with Joel McHale after his incredible stand up comedy show in Bailey Hall on March 10th and got straight to the hard-hitting questions that we knew fans were yearning to ask:

Slope Media: If you were to duel Ryan Secrest, and we lived in a world where height didn’t matter and you did not have this 5 foot advantage over him, who would be the last clone left standing?

Joel McHale: If it didn’t matter? Well then it wouldn’t matter.

SM: Well, what would count? Your –

Joel: Dick size.

SM: What got you interested in acting and comedy?

Joel: Dick size.

SM: We could just stop, and I could put “dick size” on all of your answers

Joel: Great! Just say you measured it, got very in depth with charts, you did it in the metric system and standard.

Ahh.. what got me started? Well just like anything you become attracted to something that appeals to you. You know like someone who likes hot air balloons, will be like “Hey! I’m gonna start hanging out at the hot air balloon shack” And for some reason, it’s the only thing I ever wanted to do and thank god somebody employed me to do it. Just like, you know, you probably love styling your hair (gesturing to Leela) And you’re like “this is what I’m born to do.” Acting is a blessing and an affliction, if you are SO blessed that you actually get to be paid to do it, and you have solvency in it. But if you have the curse, which is you want to be an actor and you don’t work it really is hard. And I remember thinking, for many years, that I was getting acting jobs but not actually acting and that’s all I’m gonna do.

SM: You were recently on Sons of Anarchy—how was it being on a set of a drama, versus the atmosphere of Community’s set?

Joel: Exactly the same. A lot of gun play, a lot of car chases, a lot of gang members beating people up and killing them. So it was really very similar. No, but it was like I won an auction item, I was like “I get to shoot cars and go on a car chase? I was like this is crazy”

SM: If you had to choose one of the Deans costumes, what would it be and why?

Joel: Oh boy… there’s one coming up and I can’t tell you what it is but it has something to do with television. You’ll have to see it. It is remarkable. It took a long time for him [Jim Rash] to get into it, but boy was it something.

SM: How has honey Boo Boo affected your life, personally?

Joel: Well, personally, I’m getting paid to by E! to make fun of it. In that sense, I have been receiving the spoils of Honey Boo Boo.

SM: Are there family ties [from Honey Boo Boo’s] that you want to replicate with your own kids?

Joel: Yes, I would like my family to love each other. Plus putting 6 pounds of butter inside of a turkey? Yes.

SM: If you could trade twitter handles with any celebrity for a day, who would it be and what would you do with the power?

Joel: Lady Gaga. No! Justin Bieber, because he passed her. I would retweet my name all day long.

SM: What is your spirit animal?

Joel: Justin Bieber.

SM: What if it had to be four legged?

Joel: Don’t try to change the subject… Justin Bieber.

SM: What are your thoughts on corpohumanization? [As seen on Community]

Joel: I think it’s pretty great. When we finally achieve complete corpohumanization then I will be satisfied.

SM: If you were to feature on the next Childish Gambino rap album, what would your rap name be?

Joel: Ooh I would have to do what Donald did, the Wu Tang Klan name generator. But I refuse to, I mean I’m not a rapper. But I have done the folk singer one, and it’s very similar to my name cause you know folk singers have names like “John Denver”… Well mine would be “Joely McHale” Just put a y on the end.

SM: If Taylor Swift wrote a song about your relationship, what would it be called?

Joel: It would probably be called 432, which at that point would be the number of dudes she’s dated.

SM: Well that makes you feel special..

Joel: At least I got a number!

SM: Great, thanks so much for answering all our questions!

Joel: No problem, those were all very very Ivy Leauge questions.

When I was in fourth grade, I wrote a poem about conversations that go on for forty topics or so, and wind on so long, you forget why they started. It turns out, such dialogues actually exist, and one has for twenty years between Princeton Professor of Comparative Literature Claudia Brodsky and Toni Morrison, Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner, and a graduate of Cornell University.

At 82, you can only hope to be as sharp as Morrison. The incisive observations often made by her characters are not lost on the author herself. As the public Q and A started after introductions from Gerard Aching (Africana Studies), Leslie Adelson (Comparative Literature), and President David Skorton, Brodsky began to talk. After a minute, Morrison abruptly interrupted, “Can you hear her?” to which the audience responded, “No!” After some technical rearrangements, Statler Auditorium was graced with the wit and sage wisdom that only someone as seasoned as Toni Morrison could provide.

Toni Morrison was giving a lecture at Princeton, and Claudia Brodsky was fortunate enough to converse with the writer afterwards on a specific metaphor she had used. “You got that one?” Morrison asked. The two haven’t stopped talking since, and their rich dialogue on language continued on the stage in front of us at Cornell. “The literary imagination has to do with the lives we lead,” Brodsky stated, to which Morrison agreed, and proceeded to list her reasons for attending Cornell in 1955 as a graduate student in the M.F.A. program. She cites the liberating neutrality of the campus amidst a world facing Communist threat, the beauty of Ithaca in its distinct four seasons, and the comestible fare available at the Cornell Agriculture School as her main draws. Undoubtedly, her life experiences have shaped her writing, as she said that while living in California, she “kept waiting for something to happen.” In Ithaca, she must have found her spark, as she began her extensive writing career with a thesis on suicide in the works of Faulkner and Woolf. Her literary career has focused largely on finding the language to bring “goodness” as a character to life on the pages of books that so often fell prey to the temptation to write “evil.” Morrison said that “evil” always struck her as “too easy.” She said that evil always needs to come in with a top hat, coat, tails, and cane, because it is not complex. It needs literary adornments to help it along. “Goodness in literature appears with a note of apology and has trouble speaking its name…goodness is hard—you can’t seduce it. Writing and trying to find language for it is all I have ever done in a novel.”

Nothing could be truer of the writer who distinguished herself amongst traditional African American writers of the time and the preceding decades. Morrison did not want to write the stories of African Americans from the traditional viewpoint of the oppressed. She wanted to write free of “the white gaze.” She wanted to know, “What is the world like when [the white man] isn’t there?” Far from being racially divisive or alienating portions of her readership, Morrison has been able to strike the delicate balance between socially insightful prose and socially active prose. Her work is often featured in high school English courses precisely because it shows an alternative perspective—it is not whites against blacks, or blacks fighting against oppression, but simply an excursion into the lives of African Americans apart from the white culture that has overshadowed their own in historical perspectives.

Often, this approach to writing makes her work difficult but important. Beloved is not an easy read by any means—it’s almost akin to reading Shakespeare in the difficulty of the language, if one is not used to the accent and cultural enunciations of African Americans in the south (incidentally, she did take on Shakespeare in an extension of Othello. She wrote a play entitled Desdemona, which picks up where Othello left off, with the characters in the afterlife and free of any inhibitions. They say purely what is on their minds, and Morrison writes “all the stories Shakespeare didn’t” in Othello). But once you’re used to the style of writing, it becomes clear, especially in works like A Mercy and The Bluest Eye that this is some of the most important fiction you’ve ever read, because of how engaged you become. According to Morrison, this is intentional. She was herself dismayed to learn she did not coin the phrase “invisible ink,” as she has been using it to describe her method for some time. “Invisible ink” to Morrison means writing a novel in such a way that the reader gets taken in and works with the novel. It is writing so that the reader and author create the novel together. The meaning is in the structure. Toni Morrison must know the ending before she starts, because that’s where the meaning lies. Knowing how the story will end allows Morrison to withhold from the reader and employ the language at her disposal in order to summon the intended responses in her readers—pride in something that is really moral, not cheap or easy. “The lesson is hard-won and spoken by people who have been there and are not crushed.” Through this method, she had been able to find the language to write “goodness” and hopefully always will.

Singing a capella has become a huge part of my life here at Cornell. So you can imagine that discovering that the Pentatonix, the group that has become the quintessential symbol of a capella, was performing at the State Theatre in Ithaca on their 2013 tour stirred quite the excitement from the entire a capella community.

I had seen the Pentatonix on NBC’s competitive a capella reality show The Sing Off (which they did eventually win the third season of), but no television program or music recording can capture the flawed perfection of live music. For a group of only five people, the depth of their sound was unbelievable. Their ability to take a song like Swedish House Mafia’s “Save the World” and really transform it by altering the tempo and adding in more complex chord progressions, while also maintaining the true electric quality, was remarkable and made for such a unique take on the song.

They sang many of their beloved fan favorites from the show like “Video Killed the Radio Star,” “Aha!” and Katy Perry’s “E.T.” Their repertoire of songs was exceptionally well thought out and made sure that the unique talents of each vocalist was highlighted. Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” captured the exceptionally uncommon soprano range of Mitch Grassi who hit notes that I’m not sure I could even hit myself. Their famous “As Long As You Love Me/Wide Awake” mash-up showcased frontman Scott Hoying’s impressive male pop voice and vocal control as well as the power belt of the only female, Kirstie Maldonado.

Despite the crowd’s excitement for their classic a capella performances, the specialized talents of their bass Avi Kaplan and vocal percussionist Kevin Olusola were by far the most impressive aspects of the show. Kevin Olusola, who actually joined the group after the other four members found him on YouTube, performed his uncanny talent of beatboxing while playing cello. In fact, it was so fantastic that I strongly recommend that you watch it here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfbsFEvauTI

As for Avi Kaplan, he can sing two bass notes at one time, a phenomenon I could not even begin to explain even as a singer myself. When I asked him about it after the show, he explained that it has to do with the combination of the very precise positioning of the tongue and the lips. While I still don’t understand how this is physically possible, it certainly helps explain why there are more than five notes in some of the chords they sing.

I cannot deny that I was so impressed by every single one of their vocal arrangements, but it did feel as if it was a struggle between all five powerhouse talents to keep the spotlight on themselves. That being said, after the show, when my fellow a capella groupmates and I got to briefly meet them, they were all so “normal.” Avi and I gushed over our mutual love for Sara Bareilles, my group’s beatboxer Alix and Kevin practiced their percussion skills and the other girls and Kristi bonded over their favorite online shopping websites. The best part about the entire experience was just seeing how humble they really were considering the whirlwind of a year 2012 was for them.

Looking to the future the Pentatonix plan on releasing an album early this summer (probably during June, according to Scott) and continuing their 2013 tour. Check out their future dates and destinations at http://www.ptx-official.com/tour. Any a capella or Glee junkie will not want to miss out on this five member, crowd-pleasing crew.

Facebook unicorn. If you saw a Facebook unicorn in the flesh you would probably implode and break into a million skittles or something (how great were those commercials?). What is that, you ask? Let’s break this down so it’s easier to understand.

u·ni·corn [yoo-ni-kawrn]: has horns and practically defecates rainbows. The mythical drag queen version of a horse. The most fabulous, fantastical and (this is key) IMAGINARY creature of all time.

Face·book [feys-boo k]: I think this one speaks for itself. You know what happens here.

Now try to piece things together:

Face·book u·ni·corn [feys-boo k yoo-ni-kawrn]: someone who frequently surfaces on your Facebook but is illusive to you in real life. A Facebook unicorn is to social media as Denice Cassaro is to Cornell. It’s as simple as that.

While our beloved Denice is one of a kind, there are a few different types of Facebook unicorns frolicking across our newsfeeds these days, and it’s important that we know how to differentiate them:

1. The Interloping Unicorn

The interlopers of the unicornverse tend to get their fix of stardom in Facebook groups. They are as they sound: interruptive, intrusive, and interjective. Their main hobby is to leave irrelevant and unhelpful comments on any and all types of Facebook posts. When I heard about the new meditation room in Mews Hall, I jokingly asked “what is a meditation room?” in our dorm’s Facebook group after I posted about a charity event that I wanted to publicize. Rhetorical questions and jokes are apparently incomprehensible to interloping unicorns, as my sarcastic comment was followed by “it’s a room where you can sit and think about the universe…so basically, any room, you don’t need one specifically for it.” Thank you for that scintillating response, person I don’t know. I have never in my entire life felt more enlightened. Four for you, interloping unicorn. You go, interloping unicorn.

2. The ‘Stranger Danger’ Unicorn

Everyone of you has at some point scrolled down your newsfeed to realize you are Facebook friends with someone you absolutely do not know. If you are like me, you really try to reject all friend requests from potential predators and computer virus carriers. It can be an arduous task, and eventually we all slip up; on rare occasions a complete and total stranger makes it past our ironclad security system. When a ‘stranger danger’ unicorn pops up every once in awhile, we remember just how unsafe the internet really is. Who are these people? We have no idea, but some of us (admittedly) keep a few stranger dangerers around just for the purpose of entertainment. If you ever have to meet one of them in real life (and pretend you aren’t already Facebook friends), good luck not absolutely melting in front of said unicorn. Things get awkward fast.

3. The Hacked Unicorn

The hacked unicorn is easily the most innocent of the three. A hack that goes viral is Facebook gold these days, and if you fall victim to an epic hacking you very well might skyrocket to instant infamy. Against their own will, hacked unicorns are often the topic of conversation at classy dining establishments such as RPCC and Okenshields, and trust me…it takes a long time for a good hack to die. Just when you think a hacked unicorn’s post about a fictional sexcapade is gone for good, it floats back to the surface (unicorns are immortal, duh). If and when you see a hacked unicorn in person, note the “you know that I know that you know” tension…and enjoy it.

You’ll never know unless I suddenly die, and it comes out in my post-mortal blurb that a real-life superhero walked amidst us, and we weren’t even aware that super humans even existed outside of Hollywood. Some things are best left unsaid. Certain words can alter the present. Sometimes, it’s best just to distance yourself from the situation and watch events evolve and not ask those questions. It may be internally difficult, but it may be best just to let things flow. You don’t need to know everything about everyone. Some answers are just private. Stop asking, start watching.

In lieu of this evening’s INSANE news that Kendrick Lamar will be performing on Slope Day, I have decided to share some of my all-time favorite K.dot songs.

For those of you who may not know, Kendrick Lamar is THE rapper right now. A native of Compton California and a member of West Coast hip hop supergroup, Black Hippy, Kendrick dropped his first studio album ‘good kid, M.A.A.D city’ in late October 2012 and it BLEW up.

Read more about Kendrick’s m.a.a.d city HERE. But for now JUST LISTEN…..

Rigamortis off Kendrick’s 2011 mix-tape Section.80 is in my opinion one of the best songs he’s even dropped…

I realize I’ve set myself up with an unrealistic task… It is impossible to go through good kid and pick out “favorites” because the entire album is a MASTERPIECE.

I had to choose Money Trees (Feat. Jay Rock) because its incredibly well produced, the chorus is impossible to get out of your head and YA BISH listen for yourself…

Below is Bitch Don’t Kill my VIBEEEEEEE, so unavoidable even lady gaga covered it

M.A.A.D City is one of the darker tracks on the album but also one of the most brilliant….

and OF COURSE I had to include A.D.H.D. This song CATAPULTED kendrick’s career…..

and guess what…..WE GET TO SEE HIM MAY 3RD ON THE SLOPE.

Look out for next week’s Hip-Hop Memorandum

Up-and-coming rapper Kendrick Lamar will headline this year’s Slope Day, the Slope Day Programming Board announced on today in a surprise visit to the Student Assembly.

The announcement came during a discussion of a pending amendment to the Student Assembly Charter. One of the board’s members, Slopefest Director Dani Gredona ’13, was scheduled to be at the meeting to discuss the amendment because it was relevant to another group she is a part of on campus, Slope Media. The Slope Day Programming Board then seized the opportunity of one of their board members being at the meeting to unexpectedly show up and drop the news.

More details to come!

Come one, come all to the listen to the show being broadcast from the middle of the cornfield. That’s right. This is probably the only one where the dj traipses out each week to the one spot where the tunes can float freely on the air waves. One isn’t the loneliest number when you’ve got the many ears of corn listening to your every sing-song note. Besides, you’re not the only one to make this choice to kick up your boots, wear your styrofoam cheese hat, and sip a purple drank for an hour every Tuesday night. There are many more cow gurus out there. The cow movement starts with one and expands to many. It begins with you, yes you, drinking your 1% milk, one sip at a time. Check out the tunes below and the cow from Barcelona!

Fifty shades of gray? More like two shades of red. Long-time rivals Cornell and Harvard faced off once again at Lynah Rink on Friday February 15.

“I have shivers, because that’s just how much I was excited for this game… for me this game was huge,” explained Senior defenseman and team captain Laurianne Rougeau-7.

As always, the match-up between No.4 Big Red and No.5 Crimson was anticipated to be a contested challenge. In its penultimate home exhibition of the season, the Big Red women’s hockey team defeated the Crimson 3-1 after a tight battle.

Senior forward Erin Barley-Maloney-22, who assisted in all three goals, said, “We came out tonight just trying to be focused and play our hearts out. And we did.”

Cornell came out strong in the first period. Rougeau scored the team’s first goal with assists from Barley-Maloney-22 and Taylor Woods-25.

The Big Red maintained its lead into the second period, but Harvard’s Hillary Crowe-8 soon tied the score up. Both teams played their A-games, providing for little movement on either side.

“When we play consistent with discipline… we’re an aggressive team, a fast team,” Coach Dough Derraugh ’91 said of his team’s performance, “When we do play with that mindset, we’re a very tough team to beat.” And that’s exactly what the Big Red was tonight.

Junior Forward Jessica Campbell-8, who Coach Derraugh described as “the fastest skater maybe anywhere,” scored the Big Red’s second and third goals in the third period, giving the Big Red the first of the two victories it needed this weekend to secure the Ivy League title.

“We know what we gotta do, and we’re on the same page. I think we just communicate well and we talk well on the bench… We stick with our game plan,” explained Campbell of the team’s success.

Said Coach Derraugh, “It’s such a great sport, women’s ice hockey, and I think some people just don’t realize it. And tonight (the fans) got a treat to a real good hockey game.”
