To Write Love On Her Arms

Conversation: Pain, Hope, Questions, and Community

with Jamie Tworkowski and Anthony Raneri

Statler Auditorium, Wednesday, February 22, 2012, 7:30PM

Jamie Tworkowski and I sit backstage before he faces the eager crowd awaiting him in Statler Auditorium. From the moment I meet him, I note his friendly and welcoming personality, traits which the entire audience got to see minutes later. Jamie’s easy-going but passionate atmosphere aided the feel of the entire night, and the event turned into a safe space for those searching for the answers to the most difficult questions.

In 2006, Jamie began his non-profit organization, To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA), as a way to help a friend fund her recovery efforts. At that time, the company was mainly an idea, a few hundred eye-catching t-shirts, and a myspace page. Thanks to Jamie’s friendships with band members of Switchfoot and Anberlin, who wore his shirts during their shows, TWLOHA quickly gained publicity. Yet this accidentally successful marketing scheme is not the sole reason a story became a full-fledged organization: TWLOHA also features a message that resonates with people all over the world.

When TWLOHA first gained popularity, Jamie realized his friend’s story “represented people all over the world.” Over the six years of the organization’s existence, Jamie and his team have received over 170,000 emails and messages to people who have experienced or can relate to stories of depression, addiction, self-injury, or suicide. Rather than “promote awareness” (says Jamie: “I don’t even know what that means”), TWLOHA works to point people to outlets that can heal and help. More importantly, it gives people a space where they can speak up and speak out; in Jamie’s words, it gives people the “privilege to talk about things people don’t want to talk about.”

Anthony Raneri performs at the beginning of the event

The event started with an acoustic set from Jamie’s friend Anthony Raneri, frontman of Bayside, who played a number of his band’s songs as well as new music from his solo EP, “New Cathedrals.” In our interview, I asked Jamie why he thinks music has such an impact on people. He believes that music is especially healing as it has “the unique ability to move people and remind us we’re alive… you can get away with things you can’t say in everyday conversation.”

He expressed a similar statement as he introduced Anthony, calling music a “hall pass that allows us to be really honest.” That honesty was visible in Anthony’s first song, a cover of Bad Religion’s “Sorrow,” which featured lyrics including “What if every living soul could be upright and strong? / Well, then I do imagine / There will be sorrow / …no more.”

Jamie’s talk after the performance stated a similar theme, and he really wanted to stress that people can and should talk about their sorrows, find strength and support from those around them, and get help. “We all have moments we feel stuck in,” he emphasizes, “but you’re a person; you’re not a machine, you’re not a robot, you’re not perfect, your world is not based on scores. You matter because you’re here and alive on this planet.”

His question and answer session at the end of the event helped illustrate what he was trying to say throughout the entire night. Some asked questions about his work, some asked about his experiences with his friend’s addiction, and others shared personal stories. But all proved his point that people should talk about the tough issues rather than suffer silently. Thanks to Jamie Tworkowski, To Write Love On Her Arms will always be there to help.

Sigma Pi has partnered with Alpha Phi, Chi Psi, Tri-Delt, and Kappa Alpha Theta to deliver a night of entertainment this Saturday, April 2nd, at 7:30 PM in Statler Auditorium. Performances range from groups including Absolute Zero, Nothing But Treble, and Impact Dance Troupe, to individual performers such as Dylan Owen and others. The event will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, an organization that supports international type 1 diabetes research.

For Sigma Pi’s philanthropy chair, Zach Smith ‘13, the event is one he can personally identify with. “The JDRF is a cause that is extremely important to me, as my sister was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes,” Smith said. “This is going to be a great show to benefit a great cause, and is an example of the positive impact the Greek system can have on the community.”

Tickets are on sale for $5, and can be purchased from any member of the sponsoring organizations. Prices will be raised to $7 at the door on the night of the show. All proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Additionally, $10 will be donated at any time somebody texts “JDRF” to 20222 on April 2nd. Come out on Saturday night to support the cause!

Comedian Donald Glover bestowed the gift of laughter to Cornellians at Statler Auditorium on Saturday, Sept. 25, and in return received a birthday present that many stand-up comedians spend years wishing for – a sold-out show filled with laughter and enjoyment.

Joe Mande was the self-proclaimed “appetizer” before Donald Glover’s act, but the audience received him nearly as well as the “main course.” Known for his stints on Comedy Central, MTV, and Vh1, Mande was given a warm welcome Saturday night during his first visit to Cornell. An Emerson College alumnus, Mande said he was “excited to be at Cornell.” But past the introductions, Mande still kept his promise of giving some “dick jokes” which, infused with drug references and the eventual reveal of his ultimate sexual fantasy (something with a dragon?), evoked hearty responses from the audience.

After some self-deprecating remarks (including the fact that he has a “bitch-face” and people mistake him for being lesbian – maybe lose the purple hoodie?), Mande exited the stage only to be followed by a huge round of applause for the star of the show, Mr. Donald Glover. Known for his work on the NBC show Community and the comedy sketch group Derrick Comedy, it’s safe to say that Glover had a large fan base in the audience who thoroughly enjoyed his set. However, Glover did give a disclaimer saying that his set was “gonna be nothing like [Community]” because it would include “a lot more dick-talk.” Sound familiar? No wonder Mande and Glover get along so well.

Aside from supposedly dating a Cornellian on the track team, Glover claimedthat he didn’t know much about the university, but it was evident from the waves of applause, laughter, and remarks that the audience of Cornellians loved him anyway. In addition to delving into some personal anecdotes like getting punched in the face by a homeless person in New York City, thus igniting his love for homeless people, this NYU graduate stated, “Music is a big part of me.” So Glover is not only an actor and a comedian, but also a musician? Pretty impressive.

Stories from his childhood and some personal beliefs (like how it’s better to have AIDS than to have babies – you had to be there) were at the center of Glover’s stand-up, but these were the messages that evoked the booming laughter throughout Statler Auditorium, leaving everyone with smiles on their faces and craving seconds of this two-course comedy meal.
