The story of this woman is undoubtedly one of the most scandalous medical errors that occurred in France. On several occasions, doctors ignored the symptoms of her illness, ultimately leading her to a coma. Worse still, her four limbs had to be amputated to save her life!
Furious, heartbroken, and desperate, the patient decided to file a lawsuit against all those who had neglected her health. This led to legal proceedings that lasted more than a decade. Recently, justice finally rendered its verdict. Discover how she managed to survive her ordeal and the judge’s decision!
The young woman did not know where to go!
In 2011, at the age of 36, Priscilla Dray was already a mother of three and had just become pregnant again. Aware of the challenges associated with a fourth pregnancy, she decided to undergo a termination of pregnancy at the CHU de Bordeaux. However, the procedure resulted in unforeseen, even tragic, consequences!
A few hours after her operation, the young woman developed a fever of 39°C. Upon returning to the hospital, an intern informed a doctor, Dr. Dekhili, but he sent her home without a medical prescription. The next day, Priscilla’s health deteriorated rapidly.
Once again, she returned to the CHU de Bordeaux. But this time, she was so weak that they placed her on a stretcher while waiting for Dr. Vandenbossche. The same scenario unfolded; the doctor thought she was exaggerating and didn’t even bother to examine her!
She underwent 92 surgical procedures!
By the end of the day, an anesthetist noticed that a woman in critical condition was lying on a stretcher in the hospital. Of course, it was Priscilla Dray, who no longer had the strength to go home. Without hesitation, he took action to save her. However, an infection from streptococcus type A had already caused severe damage to her body!
To prevent her life from being in danger, the anesthetist decided to place her in an artificial coma. For two days and two nights, the young woman fought against death and eventually woke up. To her shock, she no longer had arms or legs!
“My body was filled with holes. The ‘flesh-eating bacteria’ was eating away at the fat and tissues in my body,” she said. In order to be able to walk again, she underwent 92 operations and a lengthy rehabilitation across the Atlantic!
A high-profile trial!
On April 17, the two defendants appeared before the judge to justify their actions. However, the first doctor claimed that he would do the same thing again if faced with a similar case. This was enough to send chills down Priscilla Dray’s spine.
The young woman responded, saying: “It’s awful. This means that tomorrow he could potentially kill someone else. I almost died. I am a survivor, but I shouldn’t be here. My testimony and my story need to serve as a warning, and we cannot allow him to say that.”
According to the prosecutor: “All the warning signs were ignored, this is outrageous.” The two doctors received six and nine months of suspended prison sentences. They must also pay a fine of 8,000 euros, in addition to the 10,000 euros in attorney fees for the plaintiff.
