We spend over 2.5 hours a day glued to our smartphones. Many find this normal, afraid to face the reality. In truth, we’ve become addicted to this little device that works wonders! A social media user decided to use a “transparent phone” to awaken the collective consciousness!
The Transparent Smartphone Captures General Interest!
On May 14th, TikToker CatGPT, whose real name is Catherine, came up with a brilliant idea. Freshly graduated in sciences and technology, the young woman set out to conduct a one-of-a-kind experiment. In her seemingly innocuous video, she appears calmly waiting in line at a shop.
However, in her hands, she holds a completely transparent smartphone. The person filming zooms in to check, and indeed, her pseudo-phone has no color and emits no light. Does she possess the pinnacle of high technology? Which manufacturer could create such a device?
A flurry of questions emerged online about this smartphone. Some even speculated about the “Nokia Clear Phone”, a genuine marvel priced at €35,000 (not!). The video quickly racked up 50 million views. Everyone took a moment to digest what just happened!
The Secret Behind This Ingenious Device!
In her subsequent post, CatGPT reveals that it was all staged. You can even see her glancing at the camera before the video cuts. Her motivation? To highlight how obsessed we are with our smartphones!
The second video, titled: “The Real Story Behind the ‘Glass Phone’ That Went Viral”, provides all the details. As you might guess, it’s not a smartphone! The TikToker describes it as a “metaphone”, meaning “a piece of clear acrylic shaped like an iPhone.”
The idea originated from a friend who suggested, “If we are all so addicted to our phones, then could we potentially curb someone’s dependency by replacing the feel of having a phone in our pocket with something that mimics that sensation?”
The young woman further adds, “It feels like a physical artifact that directly addresses this collective tension we all feel about how our devices, which are supposed to keep us connected, have the opposite effect.” However, she admits it hasn’t helped her spend less time on her smartphone!
Did the Experiment Yield Results?
On social networks, many users resonate with CatGPT’s perspective that we should reduce our smartphone exposure. Some even express interest in using the same accessory to break free from their addiction.
One person stated: “I think I would use it simply to be more focused. I catch myself using my phone constantly, whether for a brief moment or just to have it at hand.”

Another user remarked: “This is a step forward for more people to recognize our addiction to smartphones and, consequently, to foster a more constructive dialogue. The device itself doesn’t replace addiction, but it serves as a catalyst to inspire people.”
