Phantogram
Sounds Like: M83, Flaming Lips, Massive Attack
For any of you die hard New Yorkers (as in the state), Phantogram is perfect for you. The Saratoga Springs native band is on the brink of releasing their sophomore EP, Nightlife, a long awaited effort for many of their fans after their debut Eyelid Movies earned them rave reviews. Though the duo write and record in rural upstate New York, the band sounds anything but country, they sound like the name of their next EP, they sound like nightlife.
The reason that Phantogram is so well received is because of their talent at blending sounds so melodiously to be able to create one unified song, a talen that the likes of Jay-Z has even recognized. When seeing the band live, it is easy to wonder how these two performers are able to create SO MUCH with only two hands (mainly because I struggle to simply write a sentence most days).
And to tie all their sounds together, lies the beautifully soft voice of Sarah Barthel, who literally sounds like an angel. And every lyric she chants, though sparse, blends in with the rest of the music. Simply put, if you like to dance in jagged/awkward movements, then I think Phantogram is the kind of music your body would agreeable.
