February 21, 2012 —Imagine your entire college experience was “boiled down into pithy sayings and cute pictures” and published online. This pretty accurately describes Cornell Memes, a Facebook page that has taken Cornell by storm. It’s a huge collection of Cornellian inside jokes that poke fun at everything Cornellians typically poke fun at. In a short time, the page has amassed over 4,600 likes and has been filled with hundreds of Cornell-inspired interpretations of the most popular memes. The page has reached viral status and memes have been flooding the newsfeeds of Cornell students for weeks. I think Fry says it best…
If you aren’t familiar with what a meme is (!), it is a cultural symbol or idea, usually humorous, that spreads through the Internet virally. Most memes consist of a background image with a commonly understood meaning with text in the foreground that fits within the context of the image. Each type of meme has its own unique structure.
Most of the memes have received dozens of likes, with the funniest ones receiving hundreds. Incorrect usage of the memes, however, is not uncommon, as many posters do not understand how particular memes are supposed to be structured or phrased.
