The ability to summarize an entire friendship on public display: Facebook Friendship pages. “What is this?” you may ask yourself when you see “View you and [insert friend’s name here]” underneath your peer’s profile picture. Facebook created this new feature on October 28th, which allows users to view the history of interactions between two people, including their shared wall-to-wall, shared photographs, events attended, and more. You can literally see the progression of a relationship from childhood flirtation to adolescent dating to eventual marriage, if you so choose to spend your time tracking its evolution. Wayne Kao, the creator of the Friendship page, said in a blog post, “When it’s between two people who share a lot, the page really starts to reflect their friendship.” But can friendship really be defined so superficially?

These pages will exhibit only the posts that your privacy settings allow, so for those who are extremely outraged by this feature, simply put yourself on a higher privacy level. By your writing on a friend’s wall or posting a picture, you allow Facebook to publicize your postings. It’s almost like signing a consent form.

The pages do hold sentimental value, as you can look back at your first wall post with your best friend, or even with your long lost cousin. Yes, there are definitely some creepier aspects of the new Facebook addition, but overall, it just takes social networking to the next level.
